THE RIVER AND JAN

Jan has his own river.
Who’s to say it’s not for real?
When I hear him talk about it
I see my own river… in the land of the antipodes.
Where Jan’s river is
Can be anybody’s guess.
Awaiting renewal
Flowing through the ages.

Jan stares ahead,
Not aware of the world around him,
Shining in his eyes
Is the smooth surface
Somewhere out there.

Sometimes he wakes up when it’s still dark
Seeing twice the number of stars
Floating upstream
In the celestial mirror
And the water sings:
“Look at me, sonny!”
“Look at me Jan!
What I reflect shall come to pass,
What I am is what remains.

Jan stares ahead,
Not aware of the world around him,
Shining in his eyes
Is the smooth surface
Somewhere out there.


ŘEKA A JAN

Jan má svoji řeku.
Kdo může říct, že není skutečná?
Když slyším, co o ní říká,
vidím řeku, kterou mám já… u protinožců.
Kde je Janova řeka,
nikomu známo není.
Plynoucí věky čeká
na obnovení.

Jan se před sebe dívá,
svět vůbec nevnímá,
v jeho očích se třpytí
plynulá hladina
tam někde venku.

A někdy do tmy vstává
a vidí dvakrát tolik hvězd
jak plavou proti proudu
na zrcadle nebes
a voda zpívá:
„Dívej se na mě, synku!“
„Dívej se na mě, Jane!
Co odrážím, pomíjí.
Co jsem, to tady zůstane.

Jan se před sebe dívá,
svět vůbec nevnímá,
v jeho očích se třpytí
plynulá hladina
tam někde venku.
