An empty house sits in the mist, gestapo seal on the door
As he opens it, he’s well aware of what he opens with it
He knows that inside weakness, fall and snow lurk alongside his dream
The veil of fog might just as well be the smoke of Auschwitz

Persistently he dreams, in his sleep and in waking,
About the box of last year’s photos.
Locked behind two doors,
A single picture of his, an icon of sorts.

Fog conveys every shuffle of a shoe from the quays.
Seeing nothing only makes the sounds louder.
His hand, as sure as a blind man’s, enters the magical hall.
Only now, closing in, the heart starts beating faster.

Fog gives things sharper outlines, darkness illuminates
The shadows and lights in that snapshot,
Alive like Ludvík himself, like the sacramental bread
To cover all the death outside.

Prázdný dům stojí v mlze s pečetí gestapa na dveřích.
Když je otvírá, dobře rozumí, co otvírá s nimi.
Ví, že s jeho snem uvnitř skryta je slabost a pád a sníh.
Jak teď mlhou je, zastřen může být dýmem z Osvětimi.

Zdá se neodbytně, ať spí nebo bdí
o krabici loňských fotografií.
Je za dvojími dveřmi zamčená,
v ní jedna jediná jak jeho ikona.

Mlha přiblíží každé šoupnutí podrážky z nábřeží.
Není vidět nic, zato slyšet je čím dál hlasitěji.
Rukou proniká jistě jak slepec magickým zádveřím.
Cíli na dosah - až teď začíná srdce být silněji.

Mlha jen zostřuje, tma rozsvěcuje
stíny a světla té fotografie,
živé jak Ludvík sám, jako hostie,
jež všechnu smrt venku sebou přikryje.
